Riku lost his heart to darkness, so why didn't he get a Nobody? I think the common answer is that you have to become a Heartless in order to get a Nobody, and he never became a Heartless. But that's not true -- Kairi had a Nobody and she never became a Heartless...

Also when Sora became a Heartless, why was he a Shadow? I mean Xehanort's Heartless was completely distinct from all other Heartless... why did Sora just take the form of a generic Heartless, and the lowest form at that?

well didn't kiri lost her heart in kh1, wasn't that the reason Riku was trying to protect her?
and Riku didn't become a heartless because he didn't lose his heart, he just gave in to the darkness, making him evil-ish.
its like terra, who technically gave in to the darkness, but didn't become a heartless, because he didn't lose his heart.

and for sora... ummm don't really know about that. but i do know his heartless does evolve to some HUGE HEARTLESS that resembles the Darkside ( i think thats the heartless' name) so i think Xehanort's heartless evolved during BBS

Well... First of all, Xion didn't had a heartless because she had never been a somebody, she was one of those vessels Vexen created, like Riku from CoM, so yeah.
Second, i don't think (I may be very wrong) Riku lost his heart to darkness, he embraced it, he used it, so i don't think a Heartless or a Nobody were created.
Anyway, maybe,we may have yet to see his nobody after/during KH3.

Riku didn't lose his heart he just used the power of darkness. The reason why Kairi didn't become a heartless is because she is a princess of light, where her heart is full of light and has no darkness in it, you need darkness in your heart to become a heartless, now why she has a nobody is because her heart went to Sora, who when he released his heart to free Kairis heart made both his nobody and Kairis nobody, now why Sora only became a Shadow Heartless is becasue Sora had very little darkness in his heart and thus only became a Shadow

But Xion isn't a nobody she's just a replica created by Vexen, thats why she doesn't have a heartless, she's basically just memories. But since when does this have to do with Xion? It doesn't really ._.
