A question I have always wanted to know! If the Universe is everything then what the hell is it expanding into? I mean we get told the Universe is expanding outwards but how does it do that if there is nothing beyond it for it to expand into

That's easy. The universe is, indeed, everything. But you have to think of the universe as something more like thought.
Something like the internet for example is a universe in itself, and it's constantly expanding. Expanding into what you say? Well, something like thought or the universe is so massive and so surreal that it's immpossible to measure. Because it doesn't truly "exist". Thought, or the universe, is but isn't. And therefore it expands into nothing, because it is in nothing, and it is nothing.

Ah yes but for something to be classified as nothing it must still be something! For Nothing is still defined as existing there can never be a true absence in existence. For example all major creation stories say"in the beginning there was nothing" but surely there has to be something for nothing to have any real meaning! (Erm if that makes any sense to any one other than me!!)
If thinking of the Universe as thought was all it took it would be easy but by attributing the universe with a "real" existence then it must follow "real" rules. And if nothing is nothing then how can we exist? For nothing is pure absence which would surely include us??

Well the Universe is expanding, as humans discover more of it. Sort of like how we discover more webpages on the internet each time.
As for the aliens, sub-topic, I'll say a well known line from Contact:
'If we're alone, that's a lot of wasted space.'
I'm not saying there are aliens and I'm not saying there aren't. Just like to keep the possibility out there.

i don't have anymore insight on the universe expanding thing. but as for the other life bit, has anyone heard of something called the holoverse or multiverse? it the idea that there are multiple universes existing in alternite dimensions. and by multiple i mean think about each atom in our universe representing another universe. if odds of creating intelligent life are 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000x times that, but you have a near infinte ammount ammount of chances (not including the fact that have multiple chances in one unverse), then can you logically say it's even a possability for there not to be?

Think of the universe as the human mind. always expanding its knowledge. If the humans mind could hold unlimited data and keep learning something new everyday forever, then our universe is like that. Never ending yet the never endingness is everything.

I agree, I just never thought of it to that extent. But like what Dynamichorizon and legacy said.

I kinda like the way the Universe keeps being compared with the internet and I guess it kinda makes sense but idk can it really be the same? Plus theres the whole big bang big crunch theory that one day the Universe will reach its limit and come flying back together. Plus I guess htere is evidence for expansion as in some of the stars can be seen moving backwards (erm I think it's blue stars that are moving away is that right??) but isnt that just the objects within the Universe moving or is it the universe expanding! OMLife Ive just confused the hell out of me! So sorry to anyone else who reads my ramblings! :D
On the whole aliens matter which keeps coming up I agree with Saix I'm not saying there is life out there and I'm not saying there isn't but you know I think it is very possible!

There's also the concept of Black and White holes. Very interesting.
If you know what I mean, say it. If you don't, I'll explain.

Not exactly, Black Holes are A region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.
